How to Improve Gut Health Naturally: A Functional Approach

Bloating after meals, unpredictable bowel movements, acid reflux, and abdominal pain are incredibly common. But at the Kekuh Health and Wellness Institute, we emphasize that common does not mean normal.

Beyond digestive discomfort, your gut health dictates your overall health. Your gut houses 70-80% of your immune system, produces the majority of your serotonin (your "happy" neurotransmitter), and is responsible for absorbing the nutrients that fuel every cell in your body. When your gut is compromised, you might experience symptoms that seem entirely unrelated, such as brain fog, chronic fatigue, joint pain, skin issues (like eczema or acne), and autoimmune flare-ups.

    What Causes Poor Gut Health?

In functional medicine, we look for the root causes of gut dysfunction, which often include:

    • The Standard American Diet (SAD): High in processed foods, refined sugars, and inflammatory seed oils, which feed bad bacteria and starve the good.
    • Chronic Stress: Stress alters gut motility and decreases the production of stomach acid and digestive enzymes.
    • Medication Overuse: Frequent use of antibiotics (which wipe out good bacteria), NSAIDs (like ibuprofen, which damage the gut lining), and acid blockers (which impair digestion).
    • Hidden Infections: Parasites, yeast overgrowth (Candida), or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

The Functional Medicine 5R Protocol for Gut Healing

To truly heal the gut, you cannot just take a probiotic and hope for the best. At our Laurel, MD wellness clinic, we use a systematic, evidence-based approach known as the 5R Protocol.

    1. Remove

We must first remove the things that are damaging the gut. This includes identifying and removing food sensitivities (common culprits are gluten, dairy, corn, and soy), eliminating processed foods and sugars, and addressing underlying chronic infections like SIBO, parasites, or yeast overgrowths using targeted antimicrobial therapies.

    2. Replace

Next, we replace what is missing for optimal digestion. Many people with acid reflux actually have low stomach acid, not high. We may replace digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid (HCL), and bile salts to ensure your body can properly break down and absorb the food you are eating.

    3. Reinoculate

Once the bad bugs are cleared out, we reinoculate the gut with beneficial bacteria. This involves consuming prebiotics (foods that feed good bacteria, like garlic, onions, and asparagus) and high-quality, targeted probiotics. We also encourage fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi.

    4. Repair

This is a critical step that is often missed. We must repair the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract (healing "leaky gut"). We use specific nutrients like L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, aloe vera, bone broth, and omega-3 fatty acids to soothe inflammation and rebuild the gut barrier.

    5. Rebalance

Finally, we must rebalance your lifestyle to maintain your new, healthy gut. The gut-brain axis is powerful; chronic stress will quickly undo gut healing. We focus on stress management techniques, mindful eating (chewing your food thoroughly!), prioritizing sleep, and regular movement.
